The Journey of Plus Factor Care Center
(formerly Star Plus Tutorial Center)
is the Story of Three Sisters
~ The Three Sisters ~
Honey, the eldest, is a BS Psychology graduate, a licensed teacher, a certified coach-counselor from NLP Manila and a certified teacher of Vinyasa Yoga, Inside Flow, and Kids Yoga. Sugar is a BSBA Major in Marketing graduate and is a certified coach-counselor from NLP Manila. Candy, the youngest, is a degree holder of BS Information Technology, a licensed teacher, and a licensed NC II barista.
As children, the three were often encouraged to improvise on what resources they had. They were not given privileges that many children now believe they are entitled to. They did not have a television set, they had to work for their allowance, and they had to share a few toys among them. What they had however, was a strong bond and a love for fun and adventure. Their experiences as children later on were their inspirations when they developed Star Plus Tutorial Center.
~ The Humble Beginning ~
The humble beginning of the center dates back when Honey, in 2006 taught in a prestigious school in Cagayan de Oro City. She started offering tutorial lessons to some students. As the eldest among her siblings, she naturally knew how to appease children and how to motivate them to learn. Her methods were effective and her services soon became sought after by parents. Thus, she decided to share a space with a co-teacher who was also offering tutorial lessons.
In 2010, the two tutors asked Sugar to help look after their students. Sugar, who knew the legalities of establishing a business advised them to establish their tutorial center, formally registering as a business entity. Honey in conformity with Sugar prepared the documents to create Star Plus. Hence, the sibling-run business started to develop their brand of tutorial lessons.
~ The Brand ~
Candy, an artist, designed in 2012 the Star Plus logo — attaching a rainbow to signify equality, diversity, and inclusion. True enough, the center created an atmosphere where no one feels excluded. Drawing from their fun-filled childhood, the sisters developed programs that made learning enjoyable for the kids.
The center offered during summer of 2012 the Read, Write, and Draw: Reading Comprehension curriculum. On top of these, they offered art and cooking classes, paint splash attack, and basic photography. They also staged a musical for a cause — Lion King, the proceeds of which went to the survivors of Sendong, a typhoon that displaced thousands of families in Cagayan de Oro City. With the help of their talented good friends Angie and Monica, Uly, Baba, and Aya, the summer programs turned out to be a huge success. Since then, Star Plus has become not only a brand but also a community.
With the help of the siblings’ parents, Mr. Bong and Dr. Cenie and the aunt of the siblings - Ms. Belle, as well as the advice and support from friends, Star Plus expanded in 2013. It employed more teachers and began to accommodate more students.
~ At Present ~
Now, what used to be Star Plus Tutorial Center carries the new name Plus Factor Care Center. The center now shifted its focus from an academic track to offering holistic wellness not only to children but also to their entire family. The child care programs include the Pre-Kindergarten: Total Development Program especially designed for toddlers and pre-school children, with age brackets ranging from 1.10 to 4.9 years old. The center also welcomes these very young children to other programs offered such as the Mixed Media Arts and Musical productions (sing, dance, act workshops).
The three sisters grew up supporting each other. They believe that a child's potential could be developed better with a supportive environment. Currently, they continue to provide basic literacy programs and also offers programs that focus on mental health and physical fitness.
Parents have entrusted their children to Plus Factor because of the quality service it provides. From the start to present, it has become a home to young children with different backgrounds and cultures and it remains an anti-bully zone. Kids feel welcomed as they are equally treated with love and care. Students from different schools have grown with them. Although of course the children’s growth means the students eventually go, one thing remains in the center: the siblings’ passion to develop in the young the love for learning.
